The Income Tax Department does not prescribe a specific format for rent receipts. However, for a receipt to be accepted by your employer and auditable by the IT Department, it must contain certain key details.
A revenue stamp (1-rupee stamp) was previously required for receipts above ₹5,000. As per current practice, most employers no longer require it, but check your company's HR policy.

❌ Missing landlord PAN for rent > ₹1L/year
If monthly rent is ₹8,334 or more, landlord PAN is mandatory. Without it, your employer may reject the claim or deduct TDS.
❌ Submitting receipts with future dates
Receipts must show the date payment was made. A receipt dated January cannot cover December rent.
❌ Paying rent in cash without receipt
Cash payments are valid but harder to prove. Always get a signed receipt even for cash payments. For rent > ₹50,000/month, bank transfer is advisable.
Yes. To claim HRA exemption, you must submit rent receipts to your employer. For rent above ₹3,000/month, receipts are required. For rent above ₹8,333/month (annual ₹1 lakh+), you must also provide your landlord's PAN card number.
If your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 and your landlord does not have a PAN, you must submit Form 60 (a declaration by your landlord). Without this, the employer must deduct TDS on the HRA claim. The IT Department accepts Form 60 as a valid substitute.
Yes, you can claim HRA for rent paid to your parents, but it must be genuine. There must be a formal rent agreement, actual bank transfers (not cash), and your parents must declare this rental income in their ITR. The IT Department scrutinises these transactions.
You need to submit rent receipts for each month you are claiming HRA. If the rent amount is the same throughout the year, most employers accept a set of 12 receipts (one per month). If rent changed mid-year, submit receipts for each different amount period.
