WhatsApp is introducing optional usernames so people can start new conversations without immediately exposing a phone number. For creators and small businesses, the useful question is not “What is the cleverest handle?” It is: which name will customers recognise, type correctly and trust?
WhatsApp announced username reservations on 29 June 2026. Its official post says the feature will roll out gradually and that the app will notify people when it is available in their country. Check your own app rather than assume every Indian account already has the control.
Check availability before planning around it
Update WhatsApp through your normal app store, then look under Settings → Account → Username. If the option is absent, it is not available to your account yet. Do not pay a third party to “unlock” it, share an OTP, or install an unofficial app.

Prefer the shortest accurate option that does not require unusual spelling. Before reserving it, ask three people to type it after hearing it once. If they make the same mistake, simplify it.
Understand what a username changes
According to WhatsApp’s announcement:
there will be no public directory or automatic username suggestions;
a new contact must know the exact username;
an optional username key can add another control;
when usernames launch, someone who enables one can begin a first conversation without showing a phone number to the other party.
A username is an address for starting a chat, not proof that an account is authentic. Customers should still verify payment requests and account details through a trusted channel.
WhatsApp also says eligible creators, businesses and organisations can claim an existing Instagram or Facebook username. Follow only the in-app claim process and official Help Centre instructions shown to your account; eligibility may vary.
What does not change yet
KuchhBhi’s WhatsApp Direct tool creates a standard wa.me link from a full international phone number. It can prefill a message, but it does not send it, validate the recipient or hide either person’s number from WhatsApp.
Until WhatsApp documents a public username-link format and KuchhBhi releases support, do not type a username into the phone-number field. Continue using the complete country-code number and verify the chat in WhatsApp before sending.
Small-business preparation checklist
Record ownership. Note the chosen username, account owner, linked phone, reservation date and public profiles.
Align profiles. Use the same recognisable spelling across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and your website when possible.
Update editable places first. Test the active handle on a website or social bio before printing packaging.
Keep a fallback. Maintain a verified phone number or website contact route while rollout is uneven.
Add an anti-fraud line. Tell customers you never request an OTP or remote-screen access.

Suppose a customer discovers Mitti Mug Studio through a Reel.
Before username access: the business shares a verified phone contact or direct-chat link. The customer checks the recipient in WhatsApp.
After username access is confirmed: the business publishes the exact handle on its website and matching social profile, keeps a fallback contact, and does not claim the handle itself proves identity.
A useful first message is: “Namaste, I saw the blue cup set on your profile. Is the six-piece set available for delivery to Coimbatore? Please share the final price and delivery time.”
This is specific without sharing payment details or identity documents.
